Foreign Nationals in the United States must report any change of address to USCIS within 10 days of moving. This reporting requirement does not apply to A and G visa holders and visa waiver visitors. Failure to complete the change of address notification may result in criminal penalties.
If you have moved and have not yet updated your address with USCIS, please do so immediately – even if it has been more than ten (10) days.
Important Guidelines
- Nonimmigrants (H-1B, L-1, O-1, TN, F-1, etc.) without a pending green card case should not link a receipt number.
- Employees with pending I-485, I-765, or I-131 applications should include their receipt numbers.
- Each eligible family member must submit a separate address update.
Please ensure compliance as soon as possible. Let us know if you have any questions.
There are two ways that you can notify USCIS of your change of address:
- Complete the AR-11, Alien’s Change of Address Card, and mail the form to the address provided. This process does not provide an automatic update of your address. USCIS strongly encourages using the online process.
- Complete the change of address through the USCIS online account. If you do not have an account, the instructions for creating one are listed here.
Creating a USCIS Online Account
To create a USCIS online account and change your address, follow these step-by-step instructions:
- Visit the USCIS website: Go to https://myaccount.uscis.gov/create-account4.
- Enter your email address: Provide a personal email address you regularly use and click “Sign Up.” Use your own personal email account because this is your account and not a family member’s or friend’s.
- Confirm your account: Check your email for a confirmation message from USCIS and click the verification link provided.
- Review Terms of Use: Read the USCIS terms and click “I Agree”.
- Create a password: Your password must be at least 8 characters long and contain at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, and one special character. Enter and confirm your password, then click “Submit.”.
- Set up two-step verification: Select the option to receive a verification code via email or text message.
- Enter the verification code: Input the code you received and click “Submit”.
- Save your backup code: USCIS will provide a backup code for account recovery. Store this code securely.
- Select security questions: Choose five password reset questions and provide answers. Remember these for future use.
- Choose your account type: Select “I am an applicant, petitioner, or requestor” and click “Submit”.
- Complete your profile: Fill in your personal details, including your name, mailing address, and phone number.
Once your account is created, you can change your address online, satisfying USCIS requirements more efficiently than submitting a paper Form AR-11. Remember to update your address within 10 days of moving if you are an alien in the United States.
