Consular Processing

There are generally two paths to obtaining a Green Card:

  • Adjustment of Status is the process for those who currently reside in the U.S.
  • Consular Processing is the process for those outside of the U.S.

Consular Processing

First, an individual must apply and be approved for the proper visa type. The visa does not permit permanent residence in the U.S. it simply establishes a qualifying relationship. Only after the visa has been approved and the applicant has received a visa number can an individual obtain a permanent resident status (Green Card).
